Back to BlogWeb Design Trends 2018
We’re into another year, which means it’s time to take a look at the next set of trends to take the digital world by storm. Web design has always been subject to shifts in trends and new development, but 2018 is already gearing up to be a year of colour and movement. 2017 saw the rise of mobile usage over desktop browsing, which has of course set up this year to carry on improving optimisation for mobile; but what else are we going to see more of this year?
Vibrancy
We’ll see more web designers experimenting with colour this year; highly saturated images and increased vibrancy will be a big trend in 2018. Minimalism was big in 2017, but designers are going to bring more colour to the web this year, especially as screens can now produce even richer colours, which means that there is no reason to sacrifice vibrancy. Bright and bold images and patterns will attract attention – it’s time to shout about what you do with the help of colour.
Particle Backgrounds
Video has always been better than static imagery for engaging audiences, but a video has the potential to cause loading issues. A way to get around this is by creating animations that are made from lightweight JavaScript, creating movement as part of the background. It’s the perfect performance solution for adding some movement to your site.
Broken Grid Layouts
This year will see an increase in more engaging and creative layouts. With a broken grid, images and text elements can overlap or drift, creating asymmetric designs that go against the norm. This will stand out against traditional web designs, allowing for more creativity, breaking elements out of their confines and generating completely original layouts.
Illustration Takeover
Illustrations were all the rage in advertising in the 50s and 60s, but over the decades we’ve seen photographs and videos take the reins…but not for much longer. This year we’ll see a prominence of illustrations in marketing and web design as a way to bring more abstract ideas to life. Mixed media is a great way to capture an audience’s attention, and illustrations in particular can be tailored specifically to your ideas, creating a design that is innovative and memorable.
