The Client

Featuring in The Sunday Times Hundred ‘Fastest Growing Independent Companies’ list twice, Furniturebox are certainly one of the rising stars in the ecommerce industry. However, as the company continues to grow and scale since the company’s inception in 2015, Furniturebox realised that its ecommerce site could be reaching even bigger heights.

The Challenge

Furniturebox came to 5874 Commerce with a number of technical problems to solve on its existing website. The team decided that the project should be split into two main objectives: rebuilding the checkout into a bespoke, custom solution and replacing their incumbent search & merchandising platform with Searchspring to improve search and merchandising capabilities. According to Prince Mannix, a key team member on the project, “The reason for this was to improve the customer’s experience and journey through the site as they find the products they need and can checkout smoothly, all while ensuring Furniturebox are receiving the data they need to fulfil the customer’s order.”

Although every project is bound to present challenges, Prince comments that “Fortunately there wasn’t much in terms of problems before or during the project.”

One of the challenges that the team did face was navigating the quick turnaround of the project. It was imperative that the relaunch was live ahead of peak trading, which is such a crucial time for ecommerce businesses. As this deadline couldn’t be moved, it meant keeping to a very tight schedule all while the merchant carried on usual trading at the same time.

Our Solution

Custom Checkout

The team focused on building the custom checkout first. The goal when creating this bespoke solution was to provide a smooth checkout process, a large part of this was the introduction of a bespoke delivery date selector. As Furniturebox prides itself on offering its customers a wide range of shipping options, such as allowing customers to choose different delivery dates per item on the same order, the 5874 team wanted to ensure that this was easily accessed by users of the site. In order to implement these changes, the team at 5874 undertook requirement gathering and re-designed Furniturebox’s existing solution, ensuring they were capturing the key things that Furniturebox and their customers needed.

Introducing a bespoke custom checkout system also addressed other pain points for Furniturebox and its customers. Employing a custom checkout allowed customers to seamlessly progress from section to section, using things like Google Maps’ API to help them easily enter their address. The new custom checkout also allowed Furniturebox to easily track things that it wasn’t able to before, such as customer selected delivery dates. Finally, the new checkout system allows Furniturebox to have access and control over product lead times, ensuring that customers are aware of when a product can be available to them.

Searchspring Integration

The second aspect of the project was the integration of Searchspring’s search and merchandising services. When assessing Furniturebox’s current site, the 5874 team identified the Product Listing Pages and Site Search as the key areas that needed improvement. Overall, the team decided to focus on providing a solution that would make it easier for customers to search for and find the products they desire, across all devices. Part of delivering a search and merchandising solution for Furniturebox included optimising its site for mobile use.

Prince recalls the thought process of realising the issues with the mobile site and providing this solution: “Originally, their header which contained the search bar and other navigation sat at the bottom of the page. It was earmarked early on in the process that we can look to move this up to the top of the page in its traditional place, and with some thoughtful reshuffling, introduce a solution that enables the users to find categories, filters and more to get to the products they want.”

Project Results

With the website relaunch only recently going live, Furniturebox have already seen 20-25% rise in daily revenue as a result of the work done by 5874.

Furniturebox’s Director, Dan Beckles, had this to say just one day after the relaunch:

“5874 have been awesome with the roll out of the Checkout/SearchSpring and have gone above and beyond supporting us to fix bugs after the launch. This relieved a huge amount of stress and pressure and really helps us to reaffirm that 5874 are the right developers for us now and going forward with our site. We’ve all really enjoyed working with your team so far and it has been a huge breath of fresh air to have attentive and understanding developers, who genuinely care about our site and want to ensure we reach our aims.”
