The Client
Passionate about parrots, Northern Parrots have sold parrot supplies through catalogues since 1995, moving online in 1998. They sell everything any parrot owner would need to own a happy, healthy parrot.
The Challenge
Northern Parrots were looking for a modern and agile eCommerce environment rather than the custom platform they were using. They also required a strong partnership to enable them to deliver on their long-term growth plans to transform the family business to a super-scalable B2C/B2B multi-country/channel/marketplace operation, whilst also streamlining the customer experience.
The scope of the project included a new eCommerce store (fully mobile-optimised) that integrated Section.io, Searchspring Search & Merch, Braintree and a WordPress blog.

Our Solution
NP’s old website was outdated in terms of style and UX. It wasn’t mobile friendly and didn’t scale for different sized screens. The BigCommerce platform was chosen to suit NP’s requirements of an extremely agile environment that allowed them to scale up.
In order to improve the customer experience, NP needed to display content in a more attractive way, keeping on brand while also making sure it was dynamic.
5874 Commerce introduced a variety of custom widgets that are 100% editable. This empowers a store admin to make regular content changes without the need for a developer, saving time and money.
Some examples of these custom widgets include:
- Everything for Your Parrot – links to categories a store admin can select, and displays large, eye-catching images. Styled to the brand.
- Shop By Bird – a carousel that neatly displays all the bird types they sell products for.
- Everyone’s Squawking About – links to WordPress blog articles and joins them up with relevant products.
- Discover Top Brands – showcases brands that shoppers may be looking for.
- Trusted by Experts – neatly displays expert vet endorsements.
In order to make improvements to how products are sent to customers, 5874 added a direct dispatch option. Larger items such as cages (in the case of NP) can be sent directly from the supplier to avoid longer wait times. The customer would need to be aware that as it is sent separately to other items, there may be a different delivery time.
Other additions to improve the customer experience include automated promotional product badges, save for later functionality, product bundles and stock availability/due in display.
The result is a dynamic website with an integrated WordPress blog and a large number of custom elements that boost the customer experience.
